Norton Rose Fulbright awarded Platinum Gender Parity Certification by Women in Governance

Canada Press release - Recognition September 2019

Global law firm Norton Rose Fulbright is pleased to announce it has again been recognized for its commitment to gender parity by Women in Governance, improving its standing over last year from Gold to Platinum. The firm obtained the highest Gender Parity Certification, Platinum, in two of three evaluation categories – for strategy in governance and vision, and for the results of its efforts to achieve equity or parity across the corporate structure. The firm has been awarded the Gold credential for its policies, practices and actions, a progression from Bronze.

Launched in Quebec in 2017 by the non-profit Women in Governance and available since 2018 to organizations across Canada with over 400 employees, the standard aims to help businesses increase the representation of women in leadership positions. Norton Rose Fulbright is listed among 48 parity-certified companies in 2019, most of which are household names.

Applicants were evaluated on a list of quantitative and qualitative criteria using a questionnaire developed   with the support of McKinsey & Company and the Quebec Order of Certified Human Resources Professionals (CRHA).

Charles Hurdon, managing partner of Norton Rose Fulbright Canada, commented:

“The equal participation and progression of women in the legal profession is of paramount importance. Our firm is taking measures to reduce the barriers female lawyers face, and we are starting to see tangible results. A little over half of our associates, 27 percent of our partners and 46 percent of our management committee are women, and we continue to adjust our strategy to keep our momentum going. Attaining Platinum-level Gender Parity Certification confirms that we are taking steps in the right direction towards gender balance.”

Sacha de Klerk, Norton Rose Fulbright Canada’s head of diversity and inclusion, added:

“Achieving parity involves changing culture by addressing behaviours and traditions that are deeply ingrained, which is often a slow process. That we are certified at a higher level than last year for gender parity and that we were named again this year among Canada’s Best Diversity Employers is a result of our continued focus on addressing the conditions that impact the engagement and retention of women.”
